VPG Factory
for Zerto
Policy-driven VPG creation and editing at enterprise scale.
Zerto delivers RPOs in seconds and recovers in minutes. Building VPGs should take minutes, not days. VPG Factory replaces one-at-a-time console work with a policy-driven approach: define your recovery-site mappings once, apply them to your VMs, and build or edit VPGs in minutes. Across multiple platforms.
Console clicks do not scale.
Protecting or migrating hundreds of VPGs and thousands of VMs means the same settings typed over and over in the Zerto console. Datastores, hosts, folders, port groups, re-IP rules. Every entry is a chance for a typo, and every typo shows up later as a failed test or a VM on the wrong network. A team can lose days to it.
From days to minutes. It's really that simple.
Load your VMs.
Bring them in from a file, or directly from vCenter. Add more at any time with Append or load the VPGs you already have for editing. Building a CSV takes time, so skip it and let the Mapping Policies do the work.
Apply a Mapping Policy.
The policy holds how source datastores, hosts, clusters, folders and port groups map to the recovery site, and how IP settings change on failover and test networks. Write the rules once, in five to ten minutes. Apply them to ten VMs or ten thousand in seconds.
Check, then run.
Every VM and VPG missing a required value is flagged before anything is sent to Zerto. Fix what is flagged, then commit the changes as a create or edit run and watch progress on the run board.
Key Features
- Mapping Policies. One policy captures the full source-to-recovery mapping and re-IP behavior. Settings come from the policy, not retyped per VPG, so manual-entry mistakes go away.
- VPG Defaults. Set journal, SLA, and other VPG-level settings once and apply them to every new VPG.
- Create and edit with the same tools. Build new VPGs or load existing ones, change them in the grid, and commit as an edit run.
- Validation before the run. "Show missing required" and "Show modified" filters on both the VM and VPG grids make it clear what still needs attention and what you have changed.
- Bulk editing with undo. Fill values across many rows at once, move VMs between VPGs without having to replicate the disks again, create new VPGs from the grid, and undo mistakes.
- Save and reuse. Policies save as JSON. Use them again on the next project, the next site, or the next migration wave.
- Built for scale. Runs up to Zerto's own limits, with built-in API throttling and pause after create so large runs finish cleanly.
- Works with VMware to VMware and VMware to Hyper-V. Connects to Zerto for VMware and Zerto for Hyper-V sites.
Who It's For
- Large protection rollouts. Standing up Zerto across hundreds of VPGs for the first time.
- Migrations. Moving workloads between sites or platforms in waves, each with its own mapping.
- Ongoing change. Bulk change the target datastore, network, or any other setting on existing VPGs. Change or add re-IP mapping. Use policies to validate settings or apply changes after a storage refresh, a network change, or a site consolidation, without rebuilding VPGs by hand.
- Partners and consultants. Repeatable, documented VPG builds across many customer environments.
See it on your own environment.
A demo build with sample files is available so you can try the workflow before connecting it to a ZVM. All downloads are signed by Illumial LLC and published with SHA-256 checksums.
